Be Safe (Virtus) Lesson Plans - $8.00

By Catholic Religion Teacher

The first of these two lessons (each about 45-minutes in length) focuses on being safe in the world and covers the following: A summary of the history of the abuse scandal that was first reported in Boston in 2002, the Catholic Church’s response (seeking to keep kids safe through many new rules and protocols), more bad news of abuse and cover-up (this time out of Pennsylvania), news of other adults (not associated with the Catholic Church) who have gotten in trouble, and how we can/should respond today.

The second lesson focuses on being safe and saintly with technology (using the Internet, using social media, etc.).

Videos are provided as springboards for conversation. Some of these videos address the following:

a. Making safe choices

b. Safe touch vs. unsafe touch

c. Speaking to trusted adults

d. Not being afraid to say “No”

e. How a Catholic can/should respond to news about abuse happening in the Church

f. Questions that should be asked before posting something online

g. Cyberbullying

This lesson plan was originally designed for my 7th and 8th grade students, but could be adapted for students between 6th-12th grade.
